Wrong ring size is, by far, the most common reason an online jewellery order comes back for an exchange — and it's almost always avoidable. Between a genuinely confusing measuring process and a UAE climate that makes fingers swell and shrink more than most people expect, it's easy to guess wrong. Here's how to get it right the first time, plus the stacking rules that turn "I own several rings" into a look that actually reads as styled.

Measuring at Home

The most reliable at-home method is measuring a ring you already own that fits the finger you're buying for — wrap a strip of paper or string around the inside of the band, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length against our sizing chart. If you don't have a ring to measure, wrapping the actual finger with a strip of paper works too, but do it at room temperature and mid-afternoon rather than first thing in the morning or after a workout — both distort the reading.

Why UAE Heat and Humidity Change Your Size During the Day

Fingers genuinely do swell in the UAE's heat and humidity — often by half a size or more between an air-conditioned morning and a walk outside in August. If you're measuring for a ring you'll wear year-round, aim for a size that's comfortable on a warm afternoon rather than a cool morning; a ring that's snug in air conditioning but tight in the heat is the more common complaint we hear than the reverse. This is also why we'd always recommend getting sized in person if you're anywhere near Dubai rather than relying on an at-home measurement for a piece you plan to keep for years — you can book a fitting appointment and we'll get it exactly right.

Getting It Sized In Person

For anything significant — an engagement ring especially — an in-person sizing takes minutes and removes all the guesswork. It's also worth doing if you're buying a gift and can get the recipient's ring sized discreetly beforehand, or if you're ordering a wider band, since wider bands generally need to run slightly larger than a thin band would for the same finger.

Ring Stacking 101

Once you've got the sizing sorted, stacking is where rings get genuinely fun. A few rules that keep a stack looking intentional rather than cluttered:

  • Vary the width. A stack of identical bands reads as accidental; pairing one wider statement band with one or two thinner ones reads as styled.

  • Anchor with one "main" ring — usually the widest or most detailed — and let the others support it rather than compete.

  • Mixed metals work in a stack even when they don't work elsewhere on the body; two or three tones together photograph well.

  • Leave at least one bare finger. A full ten-finger stack tends to overwhelm even a genuinely great ring collection.

Building a Stack Over Time

The best ring stacks are almost never bought in one order — they're built piece by piece over birthdays, anniversaries and the occasional just-because. If you're starting from our everyday diamond ring guide, a simple band or a single-stone ring is the right first piece; anything more detailed can come later once you know how it sits against the others.
