On Tuesday, 3 November 2026, flags will go up on balconies, school courtyards, office towers and villa gates across all seven emirates. UAE Flag Day (Yawm Al Alam, يوم العلم) is one of the quietest national occasions on the calendar, with no public holiday and no fireworks, but it is also one of the most personal. It is the day the country pauses to look up at the same four colours together.
This guide covers where Flag Day comes from, the story of the young man who designed the flag in 1971, what each colour stands for, and how those colours have found their way into fine jewellery from our UAE Pride collection, designed in Dubai in 18K gold.
Why the UAE celebrates Flag Day on 3 November
Flag Day was first observed in 2013, which makes 2026 its 14th edition. The date marks the anniversary of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan becoming President of the UAE on 3 November 2004. Each year, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum calls on citizens and residents to raise the flag together, and he has done so again for 2026.
It is not a public holiday, so most people mark it at work or school: a short ceremony, the national anthem, and a moment of respect as the flag rises. It also opens the season of national occasions, followed by Commemoration Day on 30 November and Eid Al Etihad (National Day) on 2 December.
The 19-year-old who designed the UAE flag
In 1971, a few months before the Union, an advertisement in Al Ittihad newspaper invited the public to design a flag for the new nation. Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, then just 19 and from Abu Dhabi, saw it days before the deadline, bought colouring pencils and drawing tools, and submitted his designs. His entry was chosen from more than a thousand.
He did not find out he had won until he saw his flag raised for the first time on 2 December 1971. He later became a diplomat and served as a UAE ambassador abroad. Every time you see the flag on Flag Day, you are looking at a design sketched by a teenager who simply wanted to be part of the Union.
UAE flag colours and their meaning

The flag is a horizontal band of green, white and black, with a vertical red band at the hoist. These are the Pan-Arab colours, often linked to a line by the medieval Arab poet Safi Al Din Al Hilli. Mr Al Maainah has also spoken about his own, more local reading of them:
- Green for growth, fertility and prosperity.
- White for peace, honesty and tolerance.
- Black for strength, resilience and the solidity of the land.
- Red for courage and the sacrifices made for the nation.
Interpretations vary slightly from source to source, but the spirit is consistent: four colours that together describe a young country built on unity.
Wearing the colours with respect
The UAE takes its flag seriously. Official guidance says the flag itself must be displayed in its correct proportions and colours, kept clean and upright, and never altered or decorated. That is exactly why fine jewellery does not try to be the flag. Instead, our designers interpret the four national colours through gemstones and Italian enamel, so the piece reads as a tribute rather than a reproduction. If you are hanging a real flag at home this week, follow the official etiquette; if you want to carry the feeling with you, that is where jewellery comes in.
UAE Flag Day jewellery: four 18K gold pieces in the national colours
1. Pride in Motion Diamond Necklace (5,780 AED)

The most playful piece in the collection. The Pride in Motion Diamond Necklace is an 18K gold pendant set with ruby, emerald and black stones, with brilliant-cut natural diamonds that glide along a track as you move, so it catches the light at every angle. It comes in yellow, rose or white gold on a 16-inch chain, which sits neatly at the collarbone (our necklace length guide explains why that matters).
2. Pride in Motion Thread Bracelet (2,935 AED)

The easiest way into the collection. The Pride in Motion Thread Bracelet pairs a hand-woven thread with an 18K gold charm in the four colours. Choose green, red or black thread, yellow, rose or white gold, and kids, women's or men's sizing, which makes it a natural choice for families who want to wear something together on 3 November.
3. United Arab Emirates Gemstone Statement Ring (from 4,666 AED)
A signet-style ring with a rectangular face pavé-set in rubies, emeralds, diamonds and black stones. The UAE Gemstone Statement Ring is bold, but its smooth tapered band keeps it comfortable for daily wear. If you love colour, our gemstone jewellery guide covers how rubies and emeralds behave over time.
4. UAE Icon Pinky Ring (from 4,177 AED)
